Sexy

That one word completely sums up this amazing Chesterfield sofa that we delivered on Saturday. Hats off to our customers Devin and Hans who used the velvet Chesterfield on our showroom floor as starting point for creating a sofa that perfectly suits their stylish North Portland living room.

They chose all of the lovely details. Supple dark green leather (Echo Meadow Elk from Moore & Giles). A tailored tufted seat. Understated bronze nail heads. Pretty turned wooden legs. A simple buttoned front rail. Everything came together perfectly and the sofa looks like it was made just for them, which of course it was.

Cow Hide Rugs

cowhide

When Jon suggested we get a cow hide rug for our living room a few years ago, I resisted. I grew up in Wyoming. A place where decorating tastes tend to run a little to the, um, west of mine. Lodgepole pine beds, mounted antelope heads, and arm chairs covered not just in leather, but hair-on-hide leather, are a regular sighting.

But Jon really wanted a cow hide rug, and so I relented. Over the past few years I really grew to love our cow hide rug. It never shows dirt, is easy-to-clean, and to my surprise, actually looked right at home in our 1924 bungalow.

cowhide collection

When the store opened, we brought our cow hide rug in to stage the space, and it sold in just a couple of weeks. So, I ordered several more hides and am currently deciding which one I want to take home! They are all so lovely. I’m debating between a gorgeous all black hide and a smaller white one that is flecked with charcoal grey.

The thick, high-quality hides come from Brazil and they average about 36 square feet. We currently have 10 hides to choose from and they are $275 to $300 each, depending on the color.

Birds on a Wire

Our shop is named Perch. Our logo features a pair of birds on a wire. And we used to keep four adorable hens in our backyard before we moved to Portland. Clearly, we have a thing for birds. So when I came across Studio Bon’s Wired fabric it was love.

I immediately began plotting how to use it in our home. On pillows? Perhaps. But we happen to have a very cool vintage Danish chair that Jon’s parent’s bought when they first got married in the late 60s. It desperately needs to be recovered, and the Wired fabric might be just the ticket. All of Studio Bon’s textiles are hand-printed by artisans in the United States. Just another reason to love them.

studio bon fuzz

While we don’t have any Wired in the shop, we do have two throw pillows covered in Studio Bon Fuzz. They make quite the pair!

Dog friendly

We had the cutest little visitor in our store the other day. Daisy is a rescue dog and she is so sweet. While her mom shopped for a new couch, Daisy hopped up on our Sterling sofa and just chilled out. She looks right at home, don’t you think? We bring our dog, Domino, to the store almost every day, so dogs (and their people) are most welcome to come in and take a seat. We stock tons of pet-friendly fabrics, because we understand that sometimes snuggling on the couch with your pup is irresistable.

If you’re looking for your own little couch potato to share your sofa with, check out the Oregon Humane Society. They have lots of lovable dogs and cats looking for nice homes.

Sherman tables

Our friend Zazel’s sweetie, Robert, makes beautiful tables, cabinets, and hutches from rustic barnwood. Robert travels around New York state and reclaims the timber from old barns that are being dismantled. Most of the wood comes from barns that were built in the late 19th century, but some wood comes from barns that stood in the 1700s!

Robert entered his dining table design in Apartment Therapy’s Design Showcase 2010, a contest that is open to independent and student designers and voted on by Apartment Therapy readers. You can vote for Robert’s design here and see more of his work online at Sherman Barnwood Furniture.

Amy Butler Rugs

Amy Butler Rugs

Amy Butler is an Ohio-based artist, pattern maker, and textile-designer who creates incredible fabrics, linens, wallpaper and goods for the home. Here at Perch we are thrilled to offer her gorgeous line of rugs. Handmade from 100% New Zealand wool, each rug is based on Butler’s fabric and bedding prints and they feature bold, graphic floral designs. The rugs are made by Chandra, a company that is committed to preserving the tradition of rug making in India while using fair trade practices.

Each rug takes three days to make and the wool is hand dyed, tufted, and cut using simple tools. The resulting rugs are beautiful and very modestly priced, with 5′ x 7’6″ rugs priced at $780 and 7’9″ x 10’6″ rugs are $1470. All of the designs can also be made in custom sizes.

I keep telling Jon that we’re going to need a bigger house because I want every single one of these rugs!

A Peek in the Shop

At Perch furniture, we work with hundreds of different styles of sofa frames, which made it really hard to choose what we wanted to put on our floor. Ultimately we decided to go with a range of different styles, with everything form a super sleek sectional to a very traditional leather club chair. We’ve got a few more sofas and chairs coming in over the next few weeks, including a darling slipcovered English roll arm sofa that I can’t wait to arrive. But here’s a peek at what is in our shop now.

The Sterling Sofa

The Sterling Sofa starts at $1580 (as shown $1650).

This mid-century modern sofa has a streamlined silhouette straight out of the Jet Age, with cone legs, a tufted tight back, and low-profile seat cushions. This version is covered in a great vintage inspired, textured fabric, but it also looks totally amazing in leather.

The Quinn

Starting at $1660 (as shown)

Set over an attractive solid wood base, this sofa’s narrow track arms and tufted cushions with grid seams give it a clean, simple silhouette with a hint of mix-century styling. For a more classic mid-century look, you can switch out the wood base for cone legs as shown in the Quinn chair below ($875).

Quinn Chair

Milano Sectional

Milano Sectional

Starting at $3180 ($3340 as shown)

The Milano may be modern with a capital M, but it is anything but asutere. The full metal base adds a foundation of luxury, while the deep seats and the cozy chaise practically invite you to stop and enjoy the art of doing nothing. This version is covered in a durable dove grey microfiber and has foam seats and feather backs.

Lowe Sofa

Starting at $1550 (as shown)

The Lowe sofa has a simple, modern lines, with wide track arms and deep box cushions that float over a minimalist wood base. This version is covered in Hollis Pearl–a lightly textured, durable fabric–but it looks smashing in leather.

Lawson Sofa

$1300 in fabric and $1800 in leather.

Our Lawson sofa has slightly curved arms and this version is covered in Klein Ivory, a pretty linen-like fabric that is extremely durable and easy to clean. The solid wood base features a walnut colored stain and the seats feature a foam core and a feather top.

Lawson Chair

$875 in fabric; $1350 in leather

This version of our classic Lawson Chair has a solid wood base features a coffee bean colored stain and the seats feature a foam core and a feather top. I am in love with the fabric on this chair, Expectation in slate blue. It has an amazing felt-like texture, but it is super durable and easy to clean. Such a cute piece!

Bordeaux Chesterfield

Starting at $2150 in fabric (as shown).

This classic chesterfield sofa is just gorgeous, with diamond-tufted arms and back, nail head trim, and pretty turned legs. Our floor model is covered in chocolate velvet, but this sofa looks amazing in both linen and leather. The fun part about Chesterfield’s is that there are a ton of details that you can change. For instance you could do a fully tufted seat or add nailheads along the base.

Edgefield Club Chair

Starting at $1850 (as shown)

We had this chair modeled on an antique French club chair and couldn’t be happier with the results. It features generous roll arms, a lovely curved “mustache” back and tapered wood legs. A pair of these looks right at home in front of a fireplace.

Bel Air Sofa

Starting at $1780 ($1895 as shown).

Graceful curved arms, a comfy bench seat, and loose back cushions combine to make an elegant, but imminently livable sofa. This version is covered in soft, 100% cotton velvet and has a solid wood, walnut colored base.

Carlton Sleeper Sectional

Starts at $2695 ($3070 as shown with a sleeper sofa).

The ultimate couch for a family room! Perfect for TV watching, video game playing, and story book reading. Comes with or without a sleeper in the short side. Our floor model is covered in super comfy Bella Mocha fabric and has block wood legs in espresso. Can also be made into a sofa.

Catalina Sofa

Starting at $1690 (as shown)

A lovely transitional sofa, the Catalina looks at home in both traditional and more modern living spaces. This version features a wooden base stained in walnut, cushy feather seats and soft fiber backs and it is covered in Echo Pumice–a durable microsude fabric with a subtle herringbone pattern.

Hudson Sofa

Starts at $1765 in fabric ($3430 as shown in leather).

Generous proportions, cushy seats, and wide roll arms make the Hudson a wonderful lounging sofa. This version is covered in top notch Brompton Cocoa leather, but it looks great in fabric, too.

Kensington Sofa

Of our more traditional sofa styles, this one is a favorite of mine. It has lovely English roll arms, turned wooden legs, and feathers seats. I think it looks especially pretty in linen! $1695 as shown.
