I was super excited to spot a Pasha Tuffet in this great Santa Barbara ranch house profiled on Apartment Therapy. The little aluminum table is a huge favorite in the shop! We carry both the Pasha Tuffet ($295), which makes a great stool or side table, and the larger and lower Pasha Table ($390). These super versatile hollow tables are light enough that you can carry them outside and set them on the patio in summer for extra seating or as a spot to set drinks. They are made of recycled aluminum and feature scalloped sides, a hand-hammered texture, and a pretty imprinted floral pattern on top. We sell them off the floor and can also order them in new, too. This Quinn sofa is hiding a little secret: it is actually a sleeper sofa. Our clients needed a sofa for the living room of their small (but very stylish!) home. The only problem? Most sofa beds are boring at best. We knew we could do better! By starting with our regular Quinn frame, and making a few simple modifications, we hid a sleeper inside without compromising the tailored style of the sofa.

We can add a sofa bed to tons of styles. The main requirements are that the sofa:

a. Sit close to the floor

b. Have at least an 8″ front rail (the piece that runs between the arms)

These two features ensure that you can’t see the sofa bed mechanism hanging down. Our standard Quinn frame (pictured above) sits a little too high off the floor to hide a sleeper. Our solution was to lower the wooden base two inches and then add a few inches to the front rail. This maintained the seat height while concealing the sofa bed mechanism.

Sofa beds are not known for being as comfortable as, say, a bed at the Four Seasons. That said, a stay on a sofa bed is usually free, and we have an option that is better than your regular thin mattress: the Airdream! This is a mattress with a kind of “pillow top” air bed. When you unfold the bed, you inflate the pillow top and then deflate it before hiding the bed away.

We’ve build several Quinn sofa beds and most people choose our Thayer base, which has inset sled legs. You could also use the Gracie base or put the sled legs flush with the side of the sofa (see below). We think both styles look great, but don’t take it from us. We are so excited to show off this couch! Our clients recently moved from Brazil to Portland, where they rented an absolutely amazing apartment that is framed with floor to ceiling windows on two sides. They were in love with a couch from a store in Brazil and asked us if we could build something similar. Of course we said, “Yes!”

The modern frame fits in perfectly with the clean aesthetic of their apartment. This is a tuxedo style couch, which means the arms and back are the same height. We had the brushed nickel legs custom made in Los Angeles and love how they boost the boxy frame off the floor and give the couch a sense of airiness.

Our clients’ main living space is a large, open room that houses their kitchen, dining area and living room. The sofa is big (96″L by 36″D by 32″H) but its length fits the scale of the room and its height ensures that it doesn’t block their beautiful view. They chose to have the couch upholstered in Expectation Grey, a great 100% polyester fabric with a felted feel. This fabric is a particularly good fit for this room because polyester fabrics are very color fast, even in bright light, so fading shouldn’t be an issue even though this beautiful space is filled with light all day.

We named the Sterling sofa after our favorite Mad Men character, Roger Sterling, because it has super clean, mod lines and a definite mid century vibe. The Sterling is one of our most popular couches and we thought it would be fun to show how three of our clients made it their very own.

This sofa lives in an impeccably restored mid-century home in SW Portland. It is covered in a great fabric called Aberdeen Gunmetal, which has kind of a linen look. But unlike linen, this fabric is 100% polyester, which means that a spill does not spell a disaster, because it is easy to clean and durable. These clients also have two very adorable small dogs, so choosing a darker fabric was a good route for them because it will disguise any  little paw prints that might get on the sofa.

This is the first Sterling we delivered in leather and it looks phenomenal. The leather really showcases the tailored details, especially the welted seams and button tufted tight back.

Our client chose an amazing leather called Mont Blanc Truffle, which has a nuanced chocolate color that our photo doesn’t do justice to (really, you should stop by the shop and see it in person. It is so pretty!). The best part about this sofa is it will only get better as the leather softens up and breaks in with age.

One reason why many sofas built in the 60s continue to look reasonably good to this day is they were upholstered in textured, multi-colored fabrics made from synthetic fibers like polyester. These fabrics hold up to daily wear and tear and hide spills better than solid colors. These clients picked a really beautiful mid-century inspired fabric called Caravan Spice, which is woven through with umber, sienna, black, and golden colors. It looks so good on this frame and fits in perfectly in our clients’ warm, pretty apartment.

We are thrilled to announce that Portland-based artist Trish Grantham will be showing her work at Perch this summer! Trish layers pages of vintage books onto wooden panels and then paints her whimsical scenes over the top. We love how each piece weaves old stories into an intricate and imaginative new world. Trish created several original pieces for the show (including the one pictured above) and we are so excited for them to adorn our walls.

To celebrate Trish and her work, we are hosting a wine reception tomorrow evening in conjunction with 1st Thursday in the Pearl. We hope you can join us!

I recently scored a vintage wooden tripod at a thrift shop for $25.  I’m planning on putting my limited DIY skills to the test by turning the tripod into a lamp. I have never made a lamp before, but after a little online research I decided that it looks easy enough.

Yesterday, I stopped by Sun Lan Lighting, a North East Portland shop that carries pretty much every type of lightbulb ever made and all the components needed to make your own lamp. The very patient staff helped me select a ceramic socket, a plug, and a goldenrod-colored cotton cord. They even walked me through the surprisingly simple process of wiring everything together.

I want to top the tripod with a wide drum lampshade, preferably with a graphic pattern. If the lamp wiring goes well I might try my hand at covering a shade with fabric, but in the meantime I love these options from Etsy!

We love fireworks, watermelon seed spitting contests, three-legged-races, parades, waving sparklers, and eating enormous ice cream cones. In short, we think the 4th of July is the perfect holiday. So we’re closing up shop for a few days. Here’s the scoop on our hours:

Our shipment from Gallant & Jones—makers of fabulously cheerful and impossibly hip deck chairs—arrived yesterday, just in time for the 4th of July! As I unpacked them, the sun started to shine. It was like the appearance of the chairs cued summer to (finally!) start in Portland.

The chairs were inspired by classic striped English deck chairs, but they are North American to their core. The impeccably built frames were designed by two British expats, Gwyn and Tamra, and are hand-built by them in their little workshop in Vancouver, British Columbia. The frames are made from North American White Oak, which is a durable hardwood, even in the rainy Northwest. The fabric slings are handwoven in Mexico by a family of 3rd generation weavers, and the little pillow is stitched right here in Portland, Oregon and made out of 100% organic cotton.

After sitting in the deck chairs, I am pretty sure that lounging around in one without a trashy novel and a cocktail is a crime. If it’s not, it should be. The chairs have three sitting positions, which are perfect for the following things:

Position # 1: Reading. Hopefully devouring the aforementioned trashy novel.

Position #2: Drinking. Preferably before 5:00.

Position #3: Sleeping. Ideally in the middle of the day. Double points if your nap takes place during the week.

We have a limited supply of the Cabin, Dock, and Woodland chairs (the textiles are pictured from left to right above). Each chair is $325. With every purchase, Gwyn and Tamra dontate money to Love Trees, a non-profit that gives tree seedlings to children and empowers them to care for the tree and watch it grow.

Even if you don’t have a deck, the chairs are sure to brighten up a balcony or lawn. And they fold flat, so you can pop them in the trunk and bring them to the beach!

The Rachel is a dream to sit in. The super soft cushions are filled with FeatherCloud–a 50% super soft polyester fiber, 45% feather, 5% down blend that is just incredibly cushy and comfy. Our floor model (pictured above) shows off the super tailored slipcover, but you can really change up the look of the sofa by choosing one of the many different styling options.

The best part about this sofa is the slipcover fits perfectly. It gives it a casual, comfortable look, while looking very tailored and neat. This client was looking for a sofa to grace her traditional living room while holding up to the demands of a family with small children. She chose to slipcover the Rachel because she can machine wash or dry clean the cover as often as necessary. The addition of a mini box pleated skirt gives the sofa a finished look, don’t you think?

The upholstered version of the Rachel sofa (above) has super clean lines that show off the frame’s elegant, curved English roll arm. The great thing about having this sofa upholstered is you can also always order a slipcover if you want to change up the look of your sofa seasonally or your color scheme changes down the road.

If you’re looking for a bulletproof fabric that handles spills, dogs, cats, and the wear and tear of a busy life, Echo Suede is right up your alley. This microsuede has a subtle herringbone pattern and it dresses up very pretty on a wide range of frames. It looks especially nice on this Quinn sofa, which now adorns a Pearl District condo filled with art and furniture our clients’ have collected over a lifetime of travel.

This is a customized sectional version of our Quinn sofa. Our clients wanted plenty of seating in their new home but standard sectional sizes weren’t quite right for their space. So we built them a two piece sectional that is 75″ long on the left side and 115″ on the right. They also wanted a bit more of a lounge-like feel, so we increased the seat depth slightly. Our Quinn floor model has the Thayer base, which features inset sled legs (as on the white sofa above), but these clients preferred the more simple, streamlined Gracie base, so we swapped it in and think it fits their new sectional perfectly.

Gray is such a popular color right now for paint, bedding, rugs, and upholstery. My personal favorite gray is a 100% cotton velvet called Cannes Dark Grey. It has a really lush feel and a deep color that this cell phone photo just doesn’t quite capture. This Bel Air sofa is covered in Cannes Dark Grey (we also increased the seat depth to make this formal sofa a bit more cushy).
